Stock# 120848

'Undertaken for purpose of completing, the Discovery of that vast Country and prosecuted in the years 1801, 1802 and 1803, in His Majesty's ship The Investigator, and subsequently in the armed vessel Porpoise and Cumberland Schooner. With an account of the Shipwreck of the Porpoise, arrival of the Cumberland at Mauritius, and imprisonment of the Commander during six years and a half in that island.'

This is a First Edition printed in two volumes by W. Bulmer and Co. London, 1814 and published by G. and W. Nicol , Booksellers to His Majesty, Pall-Mall. Only 150 copies were printed in this format and few have survived with the Publisher's original green cloth covers. Although the covers have had some minor repairs internally the pages are relatively clean.

It is accompanied by a replacement Atlas which is described as the Magg's Bros collation. ' This Atlas contains, in place of of some of the usual charts, a number of official charts issued by the Hydrographic Department of the Admiralty about 1835, which are based on those of Flinders, but are brought up to date from the surveys of P.P.King, D'Entrecasteaux, Freycinet, and others.'

A rare and fascinating account of the first circumnavigation of Australia.
